One formula holds that a person with a 60-inch screen needs to be 10 feet from the television. That’s 2 inches of distance for every inch of television. Hat tip to the Boston Globe.

People don’t seem to get that they need to be closer to an HDTV to see the detail. We have a 52″ TV and it’s just about 8 feet from the screen to where a person’s head is when they sit on the couch, so we’re pretty close to optimal. If you’re too far away, you don’t really perceive the higher quality over a traditional TV.
I don’t have a big screen TV, but I would like to get one sometime. I will experiment with your 8-foot rule.
Good to know, I’m in the market!
Oh! Maybe in time for Mad Men marathon!!!!
